Mission of Irvine Community Drug Prevention

Our mission is to support the development and implementation of evidenced based primary prevention strategies in order to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by our youth.

ICDP Promotes Research Based Strategies

ICDP supports, develops and implements activities that make a positive difference in the lives of children, youth and families in Irvine. We promote the use of research based prevention strategies (also called evidenced based strategies) because research has shown these to be more effective in reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

ICDP provides free training, technical assistance and support to Irvine's School Site Prevention Coordinators (parent, teacher, counselor, and student volunteers) responsible for coordinating and hosting school based prevention programs.

Business, agency and community partners may also access these services. For more information, call Debra Bianchi at 949-559-8710.

History of Irvine Community Drug Prevention

In 1983, Nancy Regan hosted a PBS documentary entitled, "The Chemical People" and called on citizens to organize local grass roots movements to prevent substance use by America's youth. Irvine was one of many communities in the nation that responded to this call to action by forming the Irvine Chemical  People in 1983. In 1987, the Irvine Chemical People received their 501-C 3 status and later, in 1990, the group changed the name of the organization to Irvine Community Drug Prevention (ICDP).

Since its beginning, ICDP brought together representatives from the school district, city, police department and community who were committed to creating and nurturing cooperation and a sharing of resources among partners in order to better serve our community. In the mid-1990's, IUSD, the City of Irvine, Irvine Police Department, ICDP, and Families Forward expanded our collaborative efforts by forming the Irvine Prevention Coalition, made up of multiple agency, business, faith, and community partners who provide a variety of health and human services that address the ever changing needs of our community.
