Red Ribbon Week Theme
The Red Ribbon Week Theme
While the Red Ribbon Pledge never changes, there is a new Red Ribbon Week Theme each year. Irvine's 2009 Red Ribbon Week Theme is "Dream, Believe, Achieve, Succeed"
About This Year's Red Ribbon Week Theme:
This year's theme, Dream, Believe, Achieve, Succeed inspires young people to imagine the possibilities of their life and it reminds us that they need support from us to do so. Red Ribbon Week is a great opportunity to purposely look for ways to nurture and strengthen the development of "Protective Factors" - those skills and competencies that young people need to believe in themselves and in their futures! Research has shown that when young people have these skills and competencies, they make healthier choices, do better in school, and have a more positive view of their future.

There are three categories of Protective Factors:
- Caring Relationships,
- High Expectations, and
- Meaningful Participation
And each category should be experienced in the following four domains:
- At Home,
- At School,
- Among Peers, and
- In The Community.
Research has shown that promoting the development of protective factors is an effective prevention strategy.
This year, we challenge you to plan Red Ribbon Week activities that focus on promoting these external protective factors. We know that if you do, you will have hosted a thoughtful Red Ribbon Week campaign that is truly meaningful - AND FUN!
If you are a School Site Prevention Coordinator, please review the resources and information featured on the Red Ribbon Coalition website and in the Red Ribbon Training Manual to help you incorporate the development of Protective Factors in your school's Red Ribbon Campaign.
Also, be sure to attend the August 18 Red Ribbon Week Training for New School Site Prevention Coordinators to receive your copy of the 209 Red Ribbon Training Manual early. Contact Debra Bianchi at 949-559-8710 for more information.
