Irvine schools have participated in Pennies for Prevention since 1989. In 1997, Orange County schools joined in the campaign. Since then, Pennies for Prevention has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support school and community based prevention efforts in Orange County.
Here's How it Works
During Red Ribbon Week, participating schools collect Pennies for Prevention (download the Pennies for Prevention packet to help you get started). On Friday, October 30, they gather up their pennies and deliver them to the drop off site where they are weighed and tallied. Participating schools earn $1.00 for every pound of pennies they collect and each participating school district earns $0.55 for every pound of pennies collected by their schools to support a predetermined community agency.
Participating School Districts:
- Irvine Unified School District - proceeds benefit IUSD and TUSD schools and the Irvine Prevention Coalition.
- Orange Unified School District - proceeds benefit OUSD and the district's school readiness programs.
- Saddleback Valley Unified School District - proceeds benefit SVUSD schools and the Saddleback Valley Prevention Coalition
It's easy to be a participating School District!
Title IV Coordinators - Coordinating Pennies for Prevention in your District is Easy.
- First, promote the opportunity to all your school site administrators and PTA's. Your promotional information should include the community agency partner that your district's efforts will support (in addition to your schools.)
- Next, recruit a minimum of five volunteers to assist at the Pennies for Prevention Drop Off Site in Irvine on Friday, October 30 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Note: Five volunteers are required throughout the day, however you may want to recruit two sets of volunteers to work two different shifts. Volunteers should be able to lift 50 pound bags (pennies are heavy.)
- Join us at the drop off site for day that is productive and a lot of fun.
- Pick up the Pennies for Prevention checks for your schools on January 20 and deliver them to the schools. You will also pick up your agency partner's check at that time.
Benefits
- Schools will raise money to support prevention activities at their school site.
- Additional resources support community based prevention efforts like your coalition, school readiness programs, youth development programs, or other worthwhile programs.
- Monies raised through Pennies for Prevention can also be counted when having to match funds for grants.

We hope that you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to raise funds to support prevention at your schools and in your community during Red Ribbon Week.
